Sailors and Defence personnel stepped away from their workplaces to connect with mates during HMAS Stirling’s R U OK? Day 5km walk on September 10.
Members could opt to run or walk from the base oval to Stirling’s iconic blue tree and back, encouraging conversation about wellbeing and reminding personnel that checking in with someone can make a difference.
At the halfway mark, participants were greeted at the blue tree by volunteers WO Benjamin Reid, CPO Joshua Scanlon, LS Liam Finnigan, AB Mikayla McNee and a surprise Pikachu mascot, whose appearance added some fun and colour to the event.
AB Ciara Murphy said the walk allowed members to take time out from their day to connect with those around them.
“In the workplace, it’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day tasks,” AB Murphy said.
“This walk gave people the chance to step away, connect with other members and have conversations they might not otherwise have had.”
For R U OK? Day volunteer CPO Scanlon, taking part was a simple reminder of the importance of looking out for mates.
“Looking out for your mates is something we do naturally in Defence,” CPO Scanlon said.
“R U OK? Day is a good reminder to slow down, have a conversation and let people know they’re not alone.”
The event brought together personnel from across Stirling, highlighting that conversations about wellbeing and supporting one another do not need to be complicated.
Sometimes they can begin with a walk, a high five and the question: “Are you OK?”
