The crew of HMAS Eyre recently marked three milestones, celebrating the ship’s first freedom-of-entry to Port Lincoln, 125 years of naval service to Australia and recognising the 15th anniversary of Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags).
While at sea, officers and sailors paused to acknowledge the longstanding contribution of Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags), a volunteer organisation that has provided personalised quilts and laundry bags to serving and former ADF members since 2011.
Founded by Jan-Maree Ball, the organisation creates handcrafted items often tailored to each recipient’s service, interests and experiences, providing a tangible reminder of the support and appreciation of the Australian community.
CO Eyre LCDR Amy Brauns said the organisation’s support had left a lasting impression throughout her career.
“I received my first Aussie Hero Quilt and laundry bag while deployed to the Middle East on Operation Manitou,” LCDR Brauns said.
“After months away from home, it was a powerful reminder that Australians were thinking of us, supporting us and appreciating the sacrifices made by our people and their families.
“What stayed with me most was the handwritten note. Knowing someone had taken the time to create something for a complete stranger was incredibly humbling and reminded us we were not forgotten.
“Now, as CO of Eyre, I see that same impact on our ship’s company. The gratitude these quilts and laundry bags generate among our sailors and officers is a testament to the care and generosity of the volunteers.
“Their motto is that no one who serves Australia is alone. Having experienced that support as a junior officer and now seeing its effect on my crew, I can say they deliver on that promise every day.”
Mrs Ball said reaching the 15-year milestone reflected the generosity and commitment of volunteers nationwide.
“Every quilt and laundry bag tells a story,” Mrs Ball said.
“Our volunteers want Defence members to know their service matters and that Australians appreciate what they do.
“Sharing this milestone with the crew of Eyre during Navy’s 125th anniversary year makes the occasion especially memorable.”
