A RAAF C-27J Spartan and specialist aviators deployed under the Defence Pacific Air Program (DPAP) recently supported regional maritime security efforts in Fiji under Operation Solania.

Operating alongside the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), the Australian detachment conducted aerial surveillance activities designed to strengthen maritime domain awareness and support Pacific-led efforts to monitor and protect fishery resources across the region.

The deployment forms part of Australia’s broader commitment to supporting a secure, stable and prosperous Pacific through practical cooperation, capacity-building and enduring partnerships.

DPAP delivers air mobility and aviation cooperation initiatives in Papua New Guinea and Fiji, providing opportunities for personnel from both nations to work closely together while enhancing regional aviation capability.

DPAP Detachment Commander FLTLT Justin Stevens said the operation demonstrated the value of trusted partnerships in responding to shared regional security challenges.

“Operation Solania provides an opportunity for our aviators to work alongside our Fijian counterparts in support of a shared commitment to maritime security across the Pacific,” FLTLT Stevens said.

“By combining Australian air mobility capabilities with local knowledge and regional expertise, we are helping strengthen awareness of activity within Pacific waters while supporting Pacific-led security objectives.”

'Operating together allows our personnel to learn from one another, develop professional connections and improve our collective ability to respond to future challenges.'

During the operation, DPAP personnel worked closely with members of the RFMF to plan and conduct surveillance activities over Fiji’s vast maritime zones, contributing to regional efforts to deter illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

FLTLT Stevens said the deployment also highlighted the importance of people-to-people links that underpin Australia’s defence partnerships in the Pacific.

“The strongest capability we build is our relationships. Operating together allows our personnel to learn from one another, develop professional connections and improve our collective ability to respond to future challenges,” he said.

“Our presence here reflects Australia’s enduring commitment to working with Fiji and regional partners in a way that respects sovereignty, supports local priorities and contributes to long-term regional security.”
