Leading into the holiday season, young women and men from Surf Life Saving Queensland visited the 7th Brigade at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera, to improve their leadership skills and showcase the shared values of surf life saving and Army.

The Gallipoli Barracks visit formed part of the Surf Life Saving Queensland Leadership Excellence Program, designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to become leaders within their club and in their future careers.

Visitors were hosted by members of Defence Force Recruiting and 7th Brigade who tested them with a range of military-based activities, including leadership, team-building challenges and an Army fitness session.

The visit culminated with a presentation from Defence Force Recruiting on career opportunities available in Army, Navy and Air Force.

Corporal Alicia Bloom, of Defence Force Recruiting, accompanied the group as a mentor and to discover more about how the two organisations can learn from each other.

“Surf Life Saving Queensland and the Australian Defence Force share a lot of the same values and attributes around teamwork, leadership and serving the community,” Corporal Bloom said.

“The young women and men from surf life saving are positive, goal-oriented individuals who are trained to make quick decisions. These are similar traits we look for in our personnel.”

“Surf Life Saving Queensland and the Australian Defence Force share a lot of the same values and attributes around teamwork, leadership and serving the community.”

Surf Life Saving Queensland Membership Development Manager, Jamie Findlay, said the program was vital in developing its young people into future leaders, both on and off the beach.

“Young people today are asked to negotiate a maze of relationships, networks and expectations in order to effectively lead, both in the surf life saving environments and in their careers,” Mr Findlay said.

“Leadership demands innovation, creativity, negotiation, improvisation and strategic vision and it has been a privilege to learn off some of Australia’s best leaders here at Gallipoli Barracks.”
