ADF members last month took part in a sports festival that honoured all those who have been on the front line during last year's coronavirus and bushfire emergencies.

They joined parliamentarians and emergency services personnel for the Australian Parliament Sports Club’s Recognition Sports Festival held in Canberra over the last two sitting weeks of parliament.

The festival provided members of parliament an opportunity to thank those who supported Australia’s COVID-19 and bushfire responses, including first responders and essential service workers.

Defence fielded a squad of 15 personnel who took part in a range of sports including cycling, golf and rugby.

Director-General of ADF Sport Brigadier Phil Winter said the squad welcomed the opportunity to recognise the contribution of front-line personnel in such a positive way.

“It was a chance to reunite with those who helped to protect Australian communities from the significant challenges we faced this year and who continually put others before themselves,” he said.

“Australia’s parliamentarians and front-line workers took to the various sporting codes to promote the physical and mental health benefits of sport and exercise.”
