Able Seaman Britney Beech has been looking forward to Christmas for months.
She is currently providing support at Sydney Airport on Operation COVID-19 Assist.
Earlier this year she departed on a South-East Asian deployment on board HMAS Parramatta, before COVID-19 hit.
“When we left in February it wasn’t a big thing. It was while we were at sea that the situation got worse,” Able Seaman Beech said.
She said ahead of returning to Australia, the crew got special COVID-19 briefs.
“It was scary – we didn’t know what to expect and the fact that I couldn’t get home to Queensland to see the family made it even worse,” she said.
Able Seaman Beech still hasn’t been able to get home but she was able to volunteer to support Defence’s efforts to support the whole-of-government response to the pandemic.
“I was very excited to come onto Operation COVID-19 Assist,” she said.
“I’ve enjoyed being able to help people returning home. I know a little bit about what it’s like and it means so much to be able to help put a smile on their faces.”
Able Seaman Beach said she was looking forward to seeing the smiles on her family’s faces when she finally makes it home for Christmas.
