ADF teams shine at state titles

Quick turnovers and contested shots were on display as ADF netballers competed at the HART NSW State Titles at Baulkham Hills from June 3 to 8.

The tournament brought together men’s and women’s open and reserve teams from across the country.

The women’s open team finished fifth in a strong field of 21 teams, while the women’s reserves side secured a third place finish. The men’s reserves team placed ninth out of 11 teams.

The men’s open team went undefeated in a competitive division but were ineligible for the championship due to their invitational status.

Games were played at a fast pace, with constant ball movement drawing spectators’ attention from end to end as teams executed rapid transitions and attacking plays.

SMN Gemma Baird, goal shooter on the ADF women’s open team, said constant defensive pressure allowed the side to stay competitive against their opponents.

“It was just manic defensive pressure – always being there and not letting them think they had options,” SMN Baird said.

LAC Sam Schmidt, from the ADF men’s open team, said their toughest test came against Maitland, a side whose teamwork and discipline challenged the ADF.

After trailing at half time, the team regained control through improved centre pass execution and a more controlled tempo.

“Instead of trying to out athletic them, we slowed it down and brought it back to our speed,” LAC Schmidt said.

Men’s reserves coach CPO Ellie Rochford described the HART NSW State Titles as a demanding competition, featuring high-paced and physical netball across all divisions.

She said players continued to convert shots under heavy pressure and in awkward body positions.

“There are some shots where I don’t know how they got in, but they got in, and that’s all that matters,” CPO Rochford said.

She said the experience would support player development as ADF teams prepare for further competitions in August and November.
