Ship and officer share 24th birthday

On August 17, HMAS Stuart’s crew celebrated the vessel’s 24th birthday after about a quarter century of distinguished service to the RAN.

Commissioned on August 17, 2002, Stuart is the third ship to bear the name, which has proudly become synonymous with professionalism, operational excellence and steadfast service to Australia.

For the past 24 years, Stuart and her crew have represented Australia at sea, contributing to maritime security, coalition operations, humanitarian assistance missions and international engagement activities.

CO Stuart CMDR Aaron Scott said the anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on the ship’s proud history and the people who have served on board during the past two decades.

“A ship’s birthday is about far more than the platform itself,” CMDR Scott said.

“It is about the generations of officers and sailors who have served in Stuart, the families who have supported them, and the legacy that has been handed down from one crew to the next.”

Adding to the occasion was a unique coincidence within the ship's company. SBLT Brennan Stone, a maritime warfare officer posted to Stuart, also celebrated his 24th birthday on August 17, sharing the milestone with the ship.

“Twenty-four years old is a remarkable achievement to still be in this condition. The ship's not doing too badly either,” SBLT Stone said.

The dual celebration provided an opportunity for the crew to reflect on the enduring legacy while recognising the next generation of Navy personnel who will carry that forward.
