Century RAS for Stalwart as Stuart heads north

HMAS Stalwart has recorded its 100th replenishment at sea (RAS) since its introduction to service in November 2021.

She refuelled with HMAS Stuart as the Anzac-class frigate headed north on a regional presence deployment.

The pair met in the Indian Ocean for a series of RAS evolutions, a regular yet important activity that requires Navy to project and sustain its fleet away from home ports.

Stalwart’s milestone RAS highlighted the essential contribution the Supply-class ship provides to Navy, serving as a steady presence in keeping the fleet fuelled at sea.

A RAS is one of the most demanding evolutions that a ship’s company can take part in. It requires two ships to sail in close quarters, just metres apart as the ships transfer fuel and stores.

CO Stalwart CMDR Ash Payne said highly trained crews and clear communication are required to make a RAS a success.

“Achieving our 100th replenishment at sea is a huge milestone for Stalwart and for the ship’s company,” CMDR Payne said.

“There is a sense of pride and satisfaction that goes with any successful replenishment, but this one is special.”

CO Stuart CMDR Aaron Scott said the RAS allowed his crew to hit the ground running for their deployment.

“Stalwart's support at sea through heavy hackstays and fuel transfer operations allows Stuart to patrol longer,” he said.

“Stuart’s crew is proud to be part of a generations-long tradition of Royal Australian Navy personnel deploying to the area.”

For Stuart, the ship’s transit north underlines Australia’s commitment to a safe and stable region with Stuart set to participate in port visits and engagements with partner nations across the region.
