TASK GROUP TAJI CELEBRATES FIRST AUSTRALIA DAY IN IRAQ
2 February 2016
Task Group Taji brought a little bit of Australia to Iraq by celebrating Australia Day at the Taji Military Complex north west of Baghdad.
It is the Task Group's first Australia Day since becoming fully operational in May 2015, so it was a time to celebrate in style.
They decorated the Dining Facility in Australiana, played Australian movies during meal times, served Australian food for dinner, held a number of Australia themed games throughout the day and played Triple J's Hottest 100 to make members of the Task Group feel closer to home.
Even the New Zealand members of the Task Group joined in, with numerous Kiwi accented "Happy Australia Day" greetings throughout the day.
The day was topped off with a trivia night which included a prize for 'Best Dressed Aussie'.
Task Group Taji Force Protection Company Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer 2 John Craig, said celebrating Australia Day in Iraq was a unique experience.
"Australia Day is always a special day back home so being able to celebrate it in Iraq was great," he said.
"Having the Kiwi members of the Task Group participate made the day even more enjoyable and was something I hadn't experienced before.
"Being away for special occasions like this can be tough so it's good when we can come together as a Task Group to celebrate them.
"It helps to remind us of home and makes the time away that little bit easier to endure."
