Response to reporting by the Toowoomba Chronicle on contamination near Army Aviation Centre Oakey

31 August 2016

Defence wishes to correct the record in relation to the Toowoomba Chronicle article “Health impacts revealed – Oakey’s blood test results to be released in new report” of 31 August that states that PFAS chemicals are expected to remain in the soil for the next 100 years.

The recently released environmental assessment report does not state that the contamination will remain in the soil over the next 100 years despite remediation measures from Defence.

The modelling that is shown in the report is what might exist if absolutely nothing was done to address these compounds in groundwater.

Defence is looking  actively at options to address  the  management of these compounds on and in the vicinity of the Army Aviation Base at Oakey.
