6 September 2014
Contrary to reports published by News Limited in the Northern Territory News on Saturday 6 September, Defence does not hold 'secret files' on abuse. Service police records are stored appropriately in accordance with the Archives Act. Defence has made, and continues to make, these files available to the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce (DART) and civilian police on request.
Defence has also recently completed a project to create a digital record of hardcopy service police files to make it easier for these records to be located and provided to agencies such as the DART, civilian police, the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
Defence is committed to addressing abuse in the Australian Defence Force and, where there is sufficient evidence available to meet the standards of proof required under law, Defence will take action against the perpetrators.
