Updated Defence and Strategic Goods List
14 October 2011Defence has released a revised Defence and Strategic Goods List (DSGL).
The Customs (Prohibited Exports) Regulations 1958 prohibits items on the DSGL from being exported from Australia unless the Government grants a license or permission.
The updated DSGL contains 58 changes, including new controls, amendments to existing controls, and notification of goods that are now decontrolled.
The DSGL is approved by the Minister for Defence under the Customs Act and is a legislative instrument. Defence has consulted with areas of industry that may be affected by these changes. An Explanatory Statement describes the consultation that has occurred with industry.
The DSGL includes the lists of controlled goods as agreed by the four major multilateral export control regimes: Wassenaar Arrangement, Australia Group, Missile Technology Control Regime, and the Nuclear Suppliers Group. Australian representatives attend regime meetings to discuss proposed changes before they are agreed.
Defence updates the DSGL annually in line with multilateral export control regime list updates, which ensures that Australia’s export controls are compatible with international standards.
