Update on alleged assault of a Defence member

26 September 2014

Defence is aware that an Australian Defence Force member who reported an assault to New South Wales Police on 25 September 2014 has now withdrawn the allegation.

NSW police will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Defence apologises for any angst this may have caused the Australian public, in particular the Middle Eastern community. The Australian Defence Force is drawn from a diverse community and values this diversity among its ranks.

The incident highlights the need to remain calm and sensible in the current environment. It also reinforces the need to avoid speculation to allow authorities the appropriate time and space to conduct their investigations.

Defence thanks the NSW Police for their close cooperation and the manner in which they have dealt with this matter.
