Statement on the termination of service of former ADFA cadet

8 November 2013

The Australian Army has terminated the service of former Officer Cadet Daniel McDonald following his conviction in the ACT Supreme Court in relation to the so-called ‘Skype’ incident.

Mr McDonald’s conduct is inconsistent with the values of the Australian Army and the standards expected of a member of the Australian Defence Force.

Mr McDonald was suspended from the Australian Defence Force Academy on 28 June 2013.

The Army subsequently advised Mr McDonald of its intention to terminate his service, on 13 September 2013.

In accordance with procedural fairness and the principles of natural justice, Mr McDonald was provided an opportunity to respond to this decision. After considering Mr McDonald’s response, the Army informed him on 23 October 2013 of its decision to proceed with the termination of his service.

Mr McDonald’s service in the ADF was formally terminated last night at 11:59pm (AEDST).

Defence will not be providing further comment, or facilitating interviews in relation to this matter.
