Simple steps to avoid cyber intrusions

25 October 2012

The need to protect data and communication systems and the best ways to combat cyber intrusions was highlighted at the DSD Cyber Security Conference.

Speaking at the Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) Cyber Security Conference , Mr Smith launched DSD’s new cyber security video Catch, Patch, Match, which coincides with the latest release of  DSD’s award winning Strategies to Mitigate Targeted Cyber Intrusions.

DSD’s Deputy Director Cyber and Information Security, Mike Burgess, said, “It really is as simple as Catch, Patch, Match: catch malware with application whitelisting; patch software and operating systems; and match administrator rights to the right people.”

“The Cyber Security Operations Centre estimates that at least 85 per cent of the cyber intrusion techniques that DSD responds to could be mitigated if organisations implemented just the Top 4 of these strategies,” Mr Burgess said.

“While there is already a strong understanding of the threats in cyberspace, there are things we can all be doing to prevent the vast majority of intrusions,” he said.

The conference theme of “Cyber Resilience: Are you ready?” was aimed at encouraging government agencies to implement measures to protect their information, while enhancing the resilience of their networks.

DSD will remain on the front foot working with Australian Government agencies in mitigating and responding to cyber security challenges.
