Public Service Excellence Awards for Deputy Secretary Defence People Group

18 October 2012

Carmel McGregor, Deputy Secretary Defence People Group, received a Public Service Excellence Award on 15 October 2012 from the Australia and New Zealand School of Government’s Institute of Governance and was awarded an Adjunct Professorship for the promotion of public sector excellence.

Ms McGregor received her reward in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the promotion of public sector excellence and in particular the work she has done for enhancing the quality of service delivery in Australia and in advancing the position of women in the Australian public service.

On 12 October, Ms McGregor was also awarded Public Policy joint category winner at the Australian Financial Review and Westpac 100 Women of Influence 2012 award. These awards recognise the contribution women leaders make in building a more sustainable economic and social future for Australia. Winners were chosen from more than 350 nominations from around Australia.

In their praise of Ms McGregor, the judges said she “has long been an agent for change in the public sector. In her new role she is using her skills and influence to oversee significant cultural change for the Australian Defence Force and its workforce.”

Ms McGregor was also recently awarded a National Fellow with the Institute of Public Administration Australia for her work on the Review of Employment Pathways for APS Women in the Department of Defence which will lead to better recognition of the achievements and abilities of women and increase their representation in senior ranks and leadership in Defence.

Acting Secretary of the Department of Defence Simon Lewis applauded McGregor’s work saying the recent awards are a testament to her leadership in these fields.

“Ms McGregor has served Australia with distinction and tireless effort. We recognise her outstanding commitment to improving and enhancing the role and leadership of women within Defence and championing our cultural change program. We are very proud to be serving the public alongside her and look forward to celebrating even more successes in the future,” Mr Lewis said.
