Navy sailor medically evacuated in the Philippines

A member of the crew of the Royal Australian Navy Collins class submarine HMAS Sheean was evacuated to Manila in the Philippines on Saturday, 7 June due to a medical emergency.

Sheean was transiting to Hawaii to participate in the US exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) when a crew member required emergency medical assistance.

Sheean called for assistance from the Philippines Navy Central Command in Cebu who promptly responded.

The sailor was transferred ashore at the port of Tacloban after which the sailor was transferred to Manila where he was treated for appendicitis.

The sailor is recovering and will be returned to Australia when he is able.
