Name release of Navy member who died following cycling accident

13 October 2013

It is with great sadness that Defence confirms that forty-six year old Chief Petty Officer Kane Vandenberg died on Friday 11 October 2013 following a cycling accident at Mt Stromlo, where he sustained a serious chest injury.

Chief Petty Officer Kane Vandenberg was a keen mountain bike enthusiast and was participating in the Australian Defence Cycling Club 2013 Cycling Carnival at the time of the accident.

Chief Petty Officer Vandenberg is survived by his wife and three sons. He was a proud member of the Royal Australian Navy who had served for 28 years.

Chief Petty Officer Vandenberg loved being part of the Navy. He spent the vast majority of his naval career within the Fleet Air Arm at HMAS Albatross in Nowra, New South Wales, where he worked on a number of different types of helicopters as an aircraft maintainer.

At the time of his death Chief Petty Officer Vandenberg was a member of the Navy People Career Management Agency at Brindabella Park in Canberra.

The Navy extends its deepest sympathy to Chief Petty Officer Vandenberg’s family, his friends and the wider Defence cycling community following this very sad accident.
