Governor-General visits Middle East HQ to pay respects

The Governor-General, Her Excellency, Ms Quentin Bryce and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE visited Australian Defence Force personnel and Defence civilians deployed to Headquarters Joint Task force 633, at Al Minhad Air Base, United Arab Emirates on 10 June 2011.
Her Excellency, Ms Bryce paid formal respects to the 27 Australian soldiers that have died in Afghanistansince operations commenced in 2002 and laid a wreath in their honour at a Memorial Service.
In addressing the Service, the Commander of Australian troops in the Middle East, Major-General Angus Campbell said the soldiers who had died gave their best in the service of their nation.
“We continue their work training the Afghan Army and Police to defend the people of Afghanistan. We give our best in memory of their legacy,” he said.
Ms Bryce and Mr Bryce then spent time talking with the personnel of the joint headquarters.
The Governor-General was on the last leg of a two week visit to Italy and Spain to attend ceremonies for the 150th anniversary of Italian National Unity and to respond to an invitation to visit Spain by King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sophia.
