Governor-General Joins Aussie Troops to Commemorate Anzac Day in Afghanistan
25 April 2012Australian troops serving on OPERATION SLIPPER, joined the Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief, Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, in commemorating Anzac Day.
A moving dawn service was held at Multi National Base Tarin Kot, where an honour roll of names was called, naming those who have sacrificed their lives while serving in Afghanistan.
The Governor-General addressed the troops who had gathered to remember.
“Australia’s modern Anzacs, I am sincerely honoured to join you here today on Anzac Day 2012 at the centre of the ADF’s operations in Afghanistan.”
“Each generation renews Anzac’s meaning and inspiration, and in doing so sustains its memory and purpose. As our modern Anzacs, you share the spirit, defend the tradition, live the values and inscribe your own extraordinary story in the Anzac stone.”
Following the Dawn Service, Australian soldiers enjoyed a traditional Anzac breakfast and will spend the rest of Anzac Day playing a cricket match against the Afghan National Army before returning to work.
