Financial education programs for ADF members recognised
6 September 2012The innovative and comprehensive range of financial education programs at Department of Defence were recognised at this week’s Financial Literacy Board’s Money Smart Week Awards in Sydney.
The Money Smart Week Awards, an Australian Government initiative, recognised Defence with a Highly Commended award in the Workplaces category.
Head People Capability in Defence People Group Major General Gerard Fogarty, who accepted the award, said Defence was delighted the panel recognised the ADF’s financial literacy programs as innovative and comprehensive.
“Defence is proud to receive this award for its work in providing independent financial education to Australian Defence Force members throughout their careers,” he said.
The Money Smart Week Awards judging panel described the program of Defence’s ADF Financial Services and Consumer Council as effective in meeting the particular needs of the ADF workforce.
According to judges, “The program is action-oriented, extremely well tailored to its target audience and is clearly contributing to the financial wellbeing of the ADF workforce. Since its inception in 2006, the program has achieved phenomenal workforce penetration.”
Chairman of the ADF Financial Services Consumer Council (ADF FSCC) Group Captain Robert Brown was excited to receive the prestigious award.
“Our dedicated team is constantly looking for new and different ways to educate our members about financial literacy. In fact, we are running a unique event at the Australian Defence College this week which is a fantastic example of this.
“The event, Big Ideas in Economics, is a fascinating journey through the major economic theories and thinkers of the last 200 years, demonstrating how they have directly impacted on the state of the world in 2012 and on Australia’s strategic position in it.”
