Defence Force launches Australia’s largest blood challenge
15 August 2014The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is partnering with the Red Cross Blood Service to officially launch Australia’s largest blood donation challenge in Canberra today.
Commander Joint Health / Surgeon General ADF, Rear Admiral Robyn Walker AM was joined by Blood Service Chief Executive, Jennifer Williams and senior Defence leaders to kick-off the 2014 Defence Organisation Blood Challenge.
Rear Admiral Walker said the annual blood challenge, which brought together the defence community and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, would help thousands of people in need of blood.
“It challenges Navy, Army, Air Force and our Defence civilians to compete between 1 September and 30 November to see who can make the greatest number of blood donations,” Rear Admiral Walker said.
“In the past five years the Defence Blood Challenge has grown in momentum and has become critical in encouraging the defence community to donate.
“The challenge is now in its sixth year and this year Defence aims to increase the level of overall donations by 500.
“The goal is to achieve over 4500 donations by attracting new donors during the three month challenge,” she said.
Rear Admiral Walker said the Australian Red Cross Blood Service had been a great supporter of the Australian Defence Force for many years.
“It is pleasing to see our people extend the spirit of our service to support the Australian Red Cross Blood Service in return,” Rear Admiral Walker said.
Australian Red Cross blood products save lives in the Australian community including service personnel.
The Defence Force and the Blood Service have collaborated over the past three years on the development and supply of frozen blood products for use by Australian troops serving overseas.
Earlier this week, Minister for Defence, Senator David Johnston celebrated the Australian Red Cross’ centenary year by affirming the special relationship it has with the Australian Defence Force.
