Chief of the Defence Force thanks Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith for his service to the Australian Defence Force
1 October 2013The Chief of the Defence Force, General David Hurley has extended his gratitude and best wishes to Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith, VC, MG on his departure from full-time service in the Australian Defence Force.
"As Australia's most decorated modern soldier, Corporal Roberts-Smith has become one of the most recognisable figures in Australia today. He was thrust into the spotlight when he was awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia in 2011 and has matured into a first class ambassador for our nation and the Australian Defence Force.
"Ben is an exemplary soldier who has demonstrated extreme devotion to duty and most conspicuous gallantry in the face of great danger. There are Australian personnel who owe their lives to Ben's courage and determination. He is one of a rare few throughout history who have shown such selfless dedication to their mission and mates.
"Sadly, Ben also knows the anguish of losing mates who have fought and died beside him or who carry the physical and mental scars of battle. He has undertaken a significant amount of charity work and plans to continue as an Ambassador for the Special Air Service Resources Trust, a supporter of the ADF Theatre Project and Patron of the White Cloud Foundation.
"I thank Ben for his service toAustralia. After almost 17 years and multiple deployments, I know he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and pursuing new endeavours, including studying for a Master of Business Administration. I wish him well as he embarks on this new chapter and look forward to his continued service in the Australian Army Reserves."
