Chief of the Defence Force congratulates Australian Business Woman of the Year

19 November 2015

Two of the Australian Defence Force's most outstanding leaders were recognised at the 2015 Telstra Australian Business Women's Awards overnight.

Captain Mona Shindy RAN was named Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year and shared the Government and Academia Award with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner, Katarina Carroll.

In a career spanning more than 25 years, Captain Shindy has served as a warship weapons engineer and led technical support teams. But it was her work in leading complex procurement projects for major Defence assets including patrol boats and littoral warfare equipment as well as her leadership on cultural change that earned Captain Shindy the accolade.

The Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, congratulated Captain Shindy on her awards.

“This is an outstanding achievement in an already distinguished career,”
Air Chief Marshal Binskin said.

“Captain Shindy is highly regarded in the engineering community and has proven herself to be an exceptional leader who represents the finest qualities and traditions of the Australian Defence Force.”

The Australian Army was also represented in the finals with Brigadier Georgeina? Whelan, director-general of the Defence Department's Garrison Health Operations, named the 2015 Telstra Australian Capital Territory Business Woman of the Year.

“Brigadier Whelan and Captain Shindy have made a substantial contribution to the ADF in their respective fields.

“To have two ADF members among the distinguished list of finalists demonstrates the caliber of our people.

“They are an inspiration, not just to women, but to all ADF personnel.”
