Battle Honour presented to the 2nd Commando Regiment
20 June 2013
The Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Quentin Bryce, AC, CVO, has presented the Battle Honour Eastern Shah Wali Kot to the 2nd Commando Regiment during a parade at Holsworthy Barracks, Sydney yesterday.
The battle honour has been awarded to the 2nd Commando Regiment and to the Special Air Service Regiment for their outstanding performance during the Shah Wali Kot Offensive in Afghanistan from May to June 2010. The award had previously been announced by the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard MP and the Minister for Defence, Stephen Smith MP on 26 March 2013.
The Chief of Army, Lieutenant General David Morrison, AO, said the battle honour, the first awarded since the end of the Vietnam War, was recognition of the exemplary work of the 2nd Commando Regiment during the Shah Wali Kot Offensive.
“The Australian Army is very proud of both this battle honour and the 2nd Commando Regiment’s contribution to the Shah Wali Kot Offensive,” Lieutenant General Morrison said.
“The battle honour is a resounding endorsement of not only the professional excellence of our Special Forces, but also of the supporting elements of Special Operations Task Group Rotation XII, the engineers, signallers, logisticians and headquarters staff.”
The Special Operations Commander, Major General Gus Gilmore, AO, DSC, said the battle honour is a well deserved recognition of the skills, teamwork and professionalism of our Special Forces in Afghanistan.
“The Shah Wali Kot Offensive achieved a very significant outcome for the coalition’s Afghanistan campaign and it was only achieved through the superior leadership and skills of Australia’s Special Forces,” Major General Gilmore said.
“This battle honour recognises the courage, dedication and professionalism displayed at all levels by those 2nd Commando Regiment and Special Air Service Regiment soldiers involved in the Shah Wali Kot Offensive.”
The Commanding Officer of the 2nd Commando Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel B [member’s identity protected], said the unit is honoured to receive the award.
“The Shah Wali Kot Offensive was a significant action in the history of the 2nd Commando Regiment and everybody is enormously proud to receive the battle honour,” Lieutenant Colonel B said.
“Commandos have a long and rich military history in Australia and those within the 2nd Commando Regiment are conscious about serving the Australian people and contributing to that history.”
The efforts of the 2nd Commando Regiment and the Special Air Service Regiment during the engagement were highly commended by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Command for the contribution it made to the overall ISAF campaign to disrupt insurgent activities in the traditional Taliban stronghold of Kandahar province.
Members of the 2nd Commando Regiment marked the battle honour presentation with a parade featuring mission-ready soldiers dressed in MultiCam uniforms and carrying weapons. The parade, scheduled to coincide with the 2nd Commando Regiment’s fourth birthday, was well received by the families and friends in attendance.
