ADFA opens its doors

28 August 2015

Australia’s pre-eminent tri-service military training institution, the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra, today welcomed the public for its annual ADFA Open Day.

ADFA prepares future leaders of the Australian Defence Force by combining military training with a world-class university education from UNSW Australia.

The Commandant of ADFA, Air Commodore Alan Clements, said the open day was a great opportunity for those interested in a career in the ADF to gain an insight into training and life as an Officer Cadet or Midshipman at ADFA.

“The ADFA Open Day provides potential applicants, families and the public with the opportunity to speak with those currently training at the academy, view some of the exciting military training on offer and to learn about the challenges, rewards and experiences offered to officer cadets and midshipmen.”

The open day provided the public with the opportunity to see many of the daily activities undertaken by those at ADFA including battle physical training, the above water obstacle courses and ground based infantry attack demonstrations.

Visitors were able to see a wide range of displays from the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force. Displays included Navy clearance divers and helicopters, the Red Berets, Army military vehicle displays, RAAF military working dogs and a spectacular RAAF Roulettes display. Personnel were also present at the open day to provide visitors with an insight into careers in the ADF.

The Rector of the University New South Wales Canberra, Professor Michael Frater, saw the ADFA Open Day as an opportunity to learn more about the array of university degrees available for potential applicants.

“UNSW Canberra has proudly provided a world-class tertiary education to the future leaders of the Australian Defence Force for half a century. UNSW Canberra’s excellence in research and teaching is reflected in the high quality and currency of programs offered to our students”.
