2013 Defence Work Health and Safety Awards
1 March 2013
Today a number of Defence members were recognised at the 2013 Defence Work Health and Safety Awards for workforce health and safety excellence.
The awards were presented in Canberra by the Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin, who co-chairs the Defence Workforce Health and Safety Committee with Ms Carmel McGregor, Deputy Secretary of Defence People Group.
Ms McGregor said that the four Defence Work Health and Safety Awards and 18 Commendations demonstrate that Defence people are striving to make measurable improvement in our work health and safety performance through the practical implementation of the Defence Work Health and Safety Strategy.
“The responsibility for work health and safety, both physical and mental, rests with all of us, but these personnel have really excelled in their work in the area of Defence safety,” Ms McGregor said.
“Defence is committed to safety and aims to ensure no person will suffer a serious preventable work-related injury or illness.”
"These awards recognise excellence in protecting Defence’s most important capability - our people,” Air Marshal Binskin said.
“The Defence leadership is determined to ensure our people can operate in workplaces that are as safe as possible, and return to their families and friends.
“This commitment must continue to be reflected at all levels of the organisation. I challenge everyone to remain vigilant, and constantly look for ways to further improve what we do.”
The Defence Work Health and Safety Awards categories are aligned to the Comcare and Safe Work Australia Award national schemes. The awards include three tiers of recognition, the Defence Work Health and Safety Award, Commendation Certificate, and Recognition Certificate.
All award winners will be submitted into the 2013 Comcare Work Health and Safety Awards in early March.
