HMAS Adelaide’s marine technicians have won bragging rights by taking out the top two team positions in the ship’s Gladiator Games 2020.

Adelaide has been conducting a range of amphibious and aviation training exercises off the coast of Queensland.

Sixteen four-person teams that included Navy and Army personnel from the ship’s company and embarked forces, competed in a series of challenges designed to test fitness and strategy.

Petty Officer Physical Training Instructor Simon Horner said the two teams of marine technicians, commonly known as 'stokers', had clearly outpointed their rivals, including a highly-fancied team from the embarked amphibious task group.

“The stokers who won the overall team prize were obviously fit, but strategy also plays a part in making sure the right individual takes on the right exercise discipline,” Petty Officer Horner said.

“This is the second time we’ve held the Gladiator Games in the ship and it’s a great way to build teamwork, camaraderie and fitness.”

The team that completed the most repetitions in a series of four exercises, including burpees, kettlebell swings, torsion bar thrusters and assault bike, in the allotted time was crowned the winner.

Lieutenant Calvin Andersen, a marine engineer undertaking a placement from the Royal New Zealand Navy, said the four members of the winning 'MT Kiwi' team had only decided to enter on the morning of the competition.

“We all enjoy going to the gym each day so we had a good level of fitness and were happy to prove that stokers are the most capable on the ship,” Lieutenant Andersen said.

“And as I like to say, every team needs a Kiwi.”

Sport within the ADF is an important element for the development of team and individual skills and is an important part of maintaining physical and mental wellbeing.

As well as the winning team, individual prize winners on the day were Leading Seaman Marine Technician Thomas Anderson, who won the most valuable individual men’s award and Army Lance Corporal Melissa Bowman, who won the most valuable female team member award.
