Netballers give it their all

Quick turnovers and hard-fought shots were on display when ADF players hit the courts at the HART NSW State Titles in Baulkham Hills from June 3-8.

The tournament brought together men’s and women’s open and reserve teams from across the country.

The women’s open team finished fifth in a strong field of 21 teams, while the women’s reserves team secured a third-place finish. The men’s reserves team placed ninth out of 11 teams.

The men’s open team went undefeated in a competitive division but were ineligible for the championship because of their invitational status.

Games were played at a fast pace, with teams executing rapid transitions and attacking plays.

LAC Sam Schmidt, of the ADF men’s open team, said their toughest test came against Maitland, a side whose teamwork and discipline challenged them.

After trailing at half-time, the ADF team regained control through improved centre-pass execution and a more controlled tempo.

“Instead of trying to ‘out-athletic’ them, we slowed it down and brought it back to our speed,” LAC Schmidt said.

Women’s open team goal shooter Smn Gemma Baird said constant full-court defensive pressure allowed the side to stay competitive against opposition.

“It was just manic defensive pressure – always being there and not letting them think they had options,” Smn Baird said.

Men’s reserve coach CPO Ellie Rochford said it was a demanding competition, featuring high-paced and physical netball across all divisions.

She said players continued to convert shots under heavy pressure and awkward body positions.

“There are some shots where I don’t know how they got in, but they got in, and that’s all that matters,” CPO Rochford said.

She said the experience would support player development as ADF teams prepared for competitions in August and November.
