Soldier thanks family for career milestone
Recognising 40 years of service, WO1 John Sullivan was presented with a Federation Star by Chief of Joint Capabilities AIRMSHL Glen Braz.
WO1 Sullivan’s career began at 17 years of age after visiting his local Army depot.
Having regularly walked past the depot, one day he decided to stop and take a closer look at an old tank on display.
“During that visit, the Army sergeant came out and had a chat with me,” WO1 Sullivan said.
“Three weeks later, pending my parents’ permission, I was on my way to Kapooka.”
Currently serving as a communications security (COMSEC) manager in the Military Technology Operations Branch in Cyber Operations Division, WO1 Sullivan plays a role in strengthening Defence’s communications security capability.
“I find it very rewarding visiting the numerous units and establishments to provide advice and guidance on best practices to maintain and improve Defence’s overall COMSEC capability,” he said.
'Receiving the Federation Star after 40 years of service brought home to me that serving in the ADF, for any amount of time, is an honour.'
WO1 Sullivan said his career in Defence was an honour and a privilege.
“Receiving the Federation Star after 40 years of service brought home to me that serving in the ADF, for any amount of time, is an honour,” WO1 Sullivan said.
“The highlight of my service has been leading teams as a corporal and sergeant, and working with people who were so dedicated to the mission, regardless of the challenges.”
WO1 Sullivan acknowledged the unwavering support of his family throughout his career.
“I would like to pay tribute to my family, who have endured constant removals and postings, leaving behind friends and schools simply because Defence needed me elsewhere,” he said.
“And for the many uncertain times when they did not know when I would be coming home, or when I would next be deployed, that is something they, like many Defence families, have had to endure.
“Their support has been invaluable throughout my career, and I could not have achieved this milestone without them.”
