Keeping Australia's northern coastline secure

Soldiers in the Top End recently conducted patrols as part of the North West Mobile Force’s (NORFORCE) Exercise Nackeroo, monitoring maritime approaches, patrolling remote terrain and engaging with local communities.

Operating in areas including Blue Mud Bay, Nhulunbuy and Borroloola, they deployed in small teams to observe key coastal regions. 

Covering isolated terrain and key areas of interest, soldiers drew on local knowledge to navigate complex environments and strengthen relationships with local communities.

CO NORFORCE Lt-Col McLeod Wood said the patrols were a routine but important part of Army’s contribution to national security.

“NORFORCE provides a consistent presence across remote areas of northern Australia,” Lt-Col Wood said.

“Our soldiers operate in small teams across large distances, applying local knowledge, field craft and community relationships to monitor activity and report as required.”

Patrols were sustained through periodic resupply and coordination between widely dispersed elements, enabling them to remain in the field for extended periods.

Pte Jay Peters said the deployment reinforced core soldier skills.

“It’s been great to be out on country, honing our patrolling skills, undertaking surveillance, reconnaissance and pathfinding on areas of interest,” Pte Peters said.

“Service is something I find to be of real importance, and I’m always happy to be out here doing my part.”
