Not every hero at Exercise Pitch Black takes to the skies.

For many personnel participating in RAAF’s premier international air combat exercise, one of the most memorable ambassadors of partnership has been Connie, the welfare dog.

Accompanied by CHAP Amanda Campbell and CHAP Darren Loechel, Connie has been a welcome presence across the exercise, offering moments of comfort and connection for personnel from 21 participating nations.

“Connie played a significant role in supporting the wellbeing of personnel throughout Exercise Pitch Black,” CHAP Campbell said.

“Her presence provided a simple but powerful opportunity for people to take a moment away from the demands of the exercise, decompress and reconnect with others.”

CHAP Campbell said Connie’s ability to transcend rank, nationality and language has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the exercise.

“People who might never otherwise start a conversation often find themselves sharing stories about pets back home or gathering together to interact with her,” she said.

One interaction that stood out involved a member of an international contingent who initially appeared reserved, but after spending time with Connie, opened up and shared stories about their own dog waiting for them at home.

“It’s a great reminder of the comfort and familiarity animals can provide, even far from home,” CHAP Campbell said.

For Spanish Air and Space Force SGT Alvaro Delgado, Connie’s impact provided them comfort despite being far from home.

“Dogs are a unique and great experience. Sometimes, dogs know more than everyone else, they can see a need,” SGT Delgado said.

Originally trained as a guide dog, Connie found her calling supporting Defence personnel at RAAF Base Darwin.

During Pitch Black, her calm and friendly nature helped build connections that extended beyond uniforms and national borders, demonstrating that sometimes the simplest gestures can make the greatest contribution to teamwork, wellbeing and international partnership.
