Bloody good combat

“Get over here” – and prepare for the blood, guts and brutal action Mortal Kombat II delivers.

Although the movie starts a little slow and clunky, it does not take long before it throws itself into the tournament and chaos fans came to see.

That works well because it keeps the action moving and makes it easier to get straight into the big moments instead of sitting through another long setup. 

Compared to the first movie, this one also goes much harder on the gore, with far more brutal finishing moves throughout that genuinely make it feel closer to the games.

One of the clear standouts was Johnny Cage. Karl Urban absolutely suited the role and brought the right mix of cockiness, humour and action-star energy. 

He did not overdo it either, which made the character genuinely enjoyable to watch instead of becoming annoying. Nearly every scene he appeared in lifted the movie.

The visual effects were another strong point. Most of the powers, fatalities and fight scenes looked really solid and felt close to the games fans grew up playing.

Some scenes genuinely looked like live-action cut scenes straight from the Mortal Kombat games, bringing back that same childhood excitement of playing them for the first time.

Once the tournament chaos really kicks in, the movie becomes a wild mix of violence, humour and fan service that is hard not to enjoy. It knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be and fully commits.

My biggest criticism is the movie could have leaned more into the arena and tournament atmosphere. 

Mortal Kombat works best when it feels like a massive deadly competition and I would have liked to see more characters from the realms watching and observing the fights to make the tournament feel even bigger and more intense.

It also would have been better hearing someone yell “mortal kombat” during one of the big fight scenes instead of waiting until the very end of the movie, just as the credits started to roll.

Overall, Mortal Kombat II may not be a flawless victory, but it delivered enough to easily earn a solid four stars and left me wanting to yell “Finish Him”.
