Extension of commitment period

The commitment period for personnel who join the permanent ADF from October 1 will be extended from five years to 10 years.

For current serving personnel who joined prior to October 1, a five-year commitment period still applies when they transition from the permanent ADF to the ADF Reserve. Members may elect to extend their commitment period to 19 years via a CDF determination.

The extension of the commitment period operationalises Recommendation 6 of the Strategic Review of the ADF Reserves 2024. It will increase the pool of experienced personnel available to support Defence during periods of increased operational or strategic demand.

Recommendation 6 will also extend the commitment period for Reserve personnel who never joined the permanent ADF. Personnel who join the Reserves after October 1 will have a commitment period of 10 years after the last day of effective service.
