Strengthening partnership to support members and preserve heritage

The RAAF and Air Force Association (AFA) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their longstanding partnership supporting veterans and their families, and preserving Australia’s military aviation history and heritage.

Signed in March by CAF AIRMSHL Stephen Chappell and AFA National President AVM Joe Iervasi (retd), the head agreement sets out six lines of effort for collaboration:

  • Leadership and proficiency awards.
  • Management of historical artefacts.
  • Promotion of history and heritage.
  • Veteran support.
  • Promotion of AFA services.
  • Communication and community engagement.

The MoU emphasises openness and shared values, with no financial commitments created.

AIRMSHL Chappell said: “The Air Force Association provides a valuable link between current serving members and those who have left the organisation but still wish to remain connected.”

Deanna Nott, National Vice President of the AFA and a wing commander in Air Force, attended the presentation of this year’s Leadership and Proficiency Awards in Canberra.

She presented the Air Force Association Trophy, which AFA has sponsored since 1961, to Headquarters Ground Academy.

“The opportunity to speak directly with serving members about what the Air Force Association does, highlight its ongoing relevance and encourage membership – while also showcasing our important work in advocacy, commemorations and now as a registered charity raising funds to support homeless veterans – was truly rewarding,” Ms Nott said.

“Meeting the winners, especially the outstanding young leaders of the future, was incredibly encouraging. It left me with every confidence that our Air Force is in very safe hands.”

The AFA has its genesis in the Australian Army-based Australian Flying Corps Association, which was established in 1920 in the aftermath of WWI.

AFA promotes social activities, supports commemorative activities, heritage and records of history, and supports welfare of members through advice, liaison and representation.
