Next generation of Commanding Officers graduate from ACSC(J)

Defence’s next generation of Commanding Officers and Staff Officers to senior leaders graduated from the Australian Command and Staff Course (Joint) in Canberra this morning.

The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Chief of the Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin AC, Secretary of the Department of Defence Dennis Richardson AO, attended the graduation ceremony, along with senior Australian National University representatives.

Commander Australian Defence College, Major General Simone Wilkie AM said attending ACSC(J) was one of the most important transitions in an officer’s career. It is an 11-month world-class program that prepares Major-equivalent officers to be Commanding Officers and key staff to senior leaders in the increasingly complex contemporary and future security environments. ACSC(J) includes strategic policy, joint operations and capability development components.

“The course prepares officers to work outside their specialisation. They are challenged by world-class lecturers and are exposed to a broad cross section of perspectives from other course members, which includes the sizeable international contingent – there are representatives of 22 foreign militaries on this year’s course. We seek to produce graduates with a joint operational focus,” MAJGEN Wilkie said.

ACSC(J) is delivered in partnership with the Australian National University. The course offers students a range of accelerated, academically rigorous areas of study that promote analysis and reinforce academic research skills. Most of today’s 165 graduates will be awarded qualifications from both the Australian Defence College and the Australian National University.

“Another important outcome from the course is the enduring professional network that course members form during the year, amongst their own Service peers, other Services, the Australian public servants and the overseas course members,” MAJGEN Wilkie said.
