Future Defence senior leaders graduate from DSSC

7 December 2015 | Media Release

Some 50 future military and public service senior leaders graduated from the Defence and Strategic Studies Course (DSSC) this afternoon, during a ceremony attended by Chief of the Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin AC, Vice Chief of the Defence Force Vice Admiral Ray Griggs AO CSC and the Chiefs of Navy, Army and Air Force.

The DSSC is an 11-month postgraduate level professional development program conducted at the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies (CDSS) at Weston Creek. The course provides Colonel and equivalent students with the skills, knowledge and attributes to operate at the highest levels of leadership, command, policy formulation and management.

Commander Australian Defence College Major General Simone Wilkie said DSSC prepared future senior leaders to operate in complex and dynamic security environments, working with a range of government agencies, non-government organisations, and international counterparts.

“The whole-of-Government perspective at DSSC is reflected in the student representation. In addition to the Australian and international military officers and Defence public servants, this year there are students from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Attorney-Generals Department, and the Australian Federal Police,” MAJGEN Wilkie said.

“DSSC is an important opportunity to broaden our international defence relationships. Students from 16 foreign defence forces graduated today. Many of them will progress to the highest ranks of their militaries and the bonds forged with the Australians at DSSC will continue to be important in the years ahead.”

The Defence and Strategic Studies Course is delivered in partnership with Deakin University. Students have the option of undertaking a Masters level qualification, such as a Master of Arts (Strategic Studies), Master of Business Administration or Master of Politics and Policy.
